OUTSTANDING SCIENTIST & DIRECTOR, GTRE
Shri T. Mohana Rao is the Outstanding Scientist & the Director, Gas Turbine Research Establishment (GTRE), a prominent DRDO laboratory involved in the Design and Development of Gas Turbine Engine (Kaveri) for the Light Combat Aircraft (TEJAS).
Shri T. Mohana Rao is born to Smt. Kamakshamma and Late Sri. T subba rao on the 5th January 1951 at R.Agramharam, of sigadam Mandalam. He topped in his SSLC in Z.P.H.School, Sigadam in1966. He did his Diploma in Mechanical Engineering at Govt. Polytechnic, Vizag during 1966-69 and stood 2nd rank. Sri. Mohan rao is also a double graduate in Aeronautical and Mechanical Engineering streams. He is a Post Graduate in Mechanical Engineering from JNTU, Hyderabad.
Shri T. Mohana Rao joined DRDO in 1971 and worked in R&D (E), Pune , CRI at HAL, Koraput and GTRE, Bangalore in various capacities. He has successfully developed various sub-systems for the Kaveri engine in addition to involving actively in the testing of Aero Gas Turbine Engines and Project Management. In the year 2009, he was elevated to the prestigious position of outstanding scientist. He is also the Chairman of the Aeronautical Society of India – Bangalore Branch which bagged the best branch award for the year 2010. Under his dynamic leadership Kaveri engine completed a land mark achievement of successful Maiden Flight of Kaveri engine at Moscow, Russia during November 2010. He is also instrumental in the development of a Marine Gas turbine engine for meeting the ship propulsion requirements of Indian Navy.
He has published many papers in national and international conferences & seminars. He led several scientific delegations on Indian and foreign missions in countries like USA, UK, FRANCE, CANADA, ISRAEL, RUSSIA & GERMANY. He is a Fellow of Institution of Engineers (India) and The Aeronautical Society of India. He was also nominated for a National Award “ Agni Award of excellence for self reliance-2010” to be received from the Prime Minister of India shortly.
He received “Dr. VM Ghatge National award” for outstanding contribution to aerospace technologies and “Award of Excellence” from All India Manufacture’s Organization (AIMO). He is also a recipient of “Eminent Engineer Award” from the Aeronautical chapter of the Institution of Engineers.
